We get inspiration from all sorts of places, and it’s important to run with that feeling, to use that lightbulb moment when it hits us. We can see this with kids – They watch the races and suddenly they’re all running round convinced they’re going to be the next Usain Bolt.
We might laugh at the kids, but they actually have the right idea. They aren’t afraid of looking silly or crashing hard, because they are totally inspired. Have you had a brilliant idea in a flash of inspiration, and then not acted upon it because the moment just fizzled out? In the light of day, did you just think, “I dunno, would anyone really buy this?” Why not look again at that idea, and see if something amazing might come of it? Radios and telephones were crazy ideas once upon a time, and now we can hardly imagine life without them. It’s pretty certain that the next big thing will start out as someone’s crazy, inspired idea. Why not yours?
I think the Olympic Spirit will be with us here in the UK for a long time to come. Watching people of all ages, from all over the world, who have worked so hard and been so very single minded to get where they are, will inspire a generation of running, biking, sailing kids. Hopefully it will inspire us grownups to great feats as well!
