There’s a well-known saying, that “necessity is the mother of invention”. In other words, if you can’t find exactly what you need, there are times when you’ll jolly well have to invent/create it yourself.
It also happens to be one of the reasons why we start our own businesses, and this is precisely what Katherine Homfray and her husband did when they couldn’t find a cute nightlight for their toddler.
Here’s their story:
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOURSELF/BACKGROUND
I am a primary school teacher and my husband is a lawyer – we both live and work in London. Other members of our family are our very greedy cats, Nessy and Gwen and our gorgeous daughter, Grace who has just turned 1.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS/IDEA AND WHY YOU LAUNCHED IT
Soon after Grace was born we knew we had to get a nightlight to help us through all those broken nights. We really struggled to find a cute one and couldn’t believe that there wasn’t one that also had other useful functions to help with the parenting process!
So we thought, ‘we’ll make our own!’ We set about designing our initial range, which includes what we believe to be the essentials.
WHAT CHALLENGES HAVE YOU ENCOUNTERED IN YOUR JOURNEY SO FAR?
There have been challenges all the way through and continue to be as I am new to all this. Initially, the challenge we faced was how does one go about creating an electrical product?! It wasn’t until we discovered that there are innovation companies who help bring ideas to life that it got easier!
Our challenge now is focused on getting people to support our crowdfunding campaign (www.born.com/cozyglo) and making people aware of what this fairly new concept is and how they can help. We are so grateful for the support so far and have raised a mega 60% of the funds we need but we need people to keep supporting and to pre-order a light to help make our night lights come to life.
Other day-to-day challenges for me are time related – juggling looking after Grace, being a teacher and launching a business is tough at times to make sure that each is getting the attention that it needs.
WHAT IS YOUR GOLDEN NUGGET OF ADVICE FOR OTHERS BRINGING A PRODUCT TO MARKET?
I would really urge people to consider Reward Crowdfunding as a route. It is fairly risk averse because the money that people pledge to buy the product does not leave people’s bank accounts until the full amount has been raised and will be refunded to people if the product is not made. It is also a great way to build up awareness of a brand and product.
I would also encourage people to talk to as many people as possible who have done something similar in the past.
WHAT KEEPS YOU GOING AND MOTIVATED DESPITE THE CHALLENGES?
We will continue to face lots of challenges, I’m sure, but we are hard-working and really believe in our product so I’m sure that we will over come them! It’s really exciting when you receive positive feedback and we view any constructive criticism as a useful tool to make necessary changes. This, combined, keeps us going!
WHAT IS YOUR VISION FOR YOUR BUSINESS.WHERE WOULD YOU LOVE TO BE IN FIVE YEARS?
We would LOVE to have our night lights in all major retail stores as well as boutiques. We also have lots of ideas for further nightlight ranges and items related to children’s night times.
