Top tips for mums balancing a working life

Sometimes it just seems impossible juggling the responsibilities of being a mum with bringing home a wage!  And while millions of women make it happen every day, doing both can leave you feeling rushed off your feet.

Flexible working

If you are in employment, you have the right to ask your employer for flexible working hours, so don’t miss the opportunity. This can mean working from home, working more hours over fewer days, sharing hours with somebody else or using flexitime – whatever works for your situation.

Put the request in writing and be as specific as you can about the hours, times, and places of work you need – many employers will do their best to accommodate you if you work together. If you feel your employer has unfairly denied your request, you can contact the Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service for assistance.



If you have a spare pair of hands (or two) around the house, don’t be afraid to put them to work. It’s not unreasonable to ask your partner or older children to handle the laundry, cleaning and cooking duties while you’re busy with the baby.

It’s also important not to put too much pressure on yourself – your home will naturally get messy when there’s a little one to take care of, so don’t get stressed out if everything’s not in its place.


Shop online

Online grocery shopping is a real boon for busy working mums – there’s no need to spend hours trailing around a supermarket with your toddler in the trolley any more!  Order all your essentials from the comfort of your own home, and have them delivered at a time that suits you. Many supermarkets now have online-only offers and deals too, so you could be saving even more money.


Get the mornings right

Any working mum will tell you that mornings are the most hectic time – getting the kids fed and off to school while preparing for your own working day is no easy task, so it’s important to get a routine going.

Try to prepare clothes, school bags and lunches the night before and get in the habit of setting off 15 minutes early for everything – this helps to cover you when the inevitable setbacks happen!
